OS2 is rated for outdoor and longer-distance applications, while OS1 is used in tighter indoor environments.
Multimode fiber uses a larger core diameter and supports multiple light wavelengths simultaneously. OM3 multimode supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at distances up to 300 meters and is widely used in data centers and enterprise networks. OM4 extends that range further and supports 40G and 100G applications at greater distances. For most in-building horizontal runs and data center inter-rack connections, OM3 or OM4 is the standard choice.
